On July 11, the world celebrates World Population Day, an annual event created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989 that seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues and their significant role in development.
The observance of World Population Day aimed also at raising people's awareness on various population issues, such as the importance of family planning, gender equality, the fight against poverty and the improvement of maternal health and human rights.
